CAPSLO Mission, Vision and Core Values Position Summary: Responsible for food service operation at a childcare center, or supports production in a central kitchen including: food preparation, purchasing, sanitation, inventory, and recordkeeping.
Prepares meals for children in Head Start and/or Early Head Start.
Supports CAPSLO’s mission by ensuring that the food service operation runs smoothly and helps individuals and families in the community.
Required Education and Experience: • Combination of two years of experience in institutional or commercial food services and/or culinary science education.
Preferred Education and Experience: • Experience cooking for large groups is preferred.
• Bilingual, English and Spanish preferred.
License & Certifications: • Must successfully complete a certified Food Safety and Sanitation class within 90 days of beginning employment.
• Must have dependable, insured transportation and valid California Driver’s License (mileage to be reimbursed) and acceptable driving record.
A DMV printout and proof of insurance will be required.
Essential Functions: • Prepares and transports meals.
Participates in nutritional menu planning.
• Develops, tests and standardizes recipes.
• Weighs, measures and packs food to be delivered to multiple centers, ensuring food temperature and quality.
• Maintains a semiannual inventory for food, paper goods, and equipment.
• Estimates and develops orders monthly for kitchen staples; orders and purchases fresh items weekly.
• Maintains records and performs data entry: Delivery Receipts, Equipment Service Record, Temperature Record, and Kitchen Financial Record.
Submits purchase receipts for vouching.
Responsibilities and Duties: • Keeps the kitchen in a clean and sanitary condition throughout food preparation; cleans the kitchen thoroughly after meal service and maintains food in proper storage conditions.
• In some cases, serves as driver for food service delivery vehicle.
Communicates with Center Supervisors and Teachers daily about the contents of each delivery.
• Attends cook workshops and participates in career development activities such as adult education courses.
• Washes dishes, cookware and utensils.
• Must be dedicated to the goals and objectives of CAPSLO.
• Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices; and act in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety on one’s self, fellow employees, clients and children.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge: • Must have the knowledge and ability to cook healthy and nutritious meals.
• Must have basic computer knowledge to perform data entry, communicate by email and submit required documents electronically.
Skills: • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Must have excellent math skills and the ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations, such as fractions, multiplication, division, etc.
• Must maintain good grooming, personal cleanliness and neatness.
Abilities: • Must be able to prepare meals using whole food ingredients (cooking from ‘scratch’).
• Must be self-motivated, self-directed, and able to work with a minimum of supervision.
• Must be able to keep records and to complete reports on time.
• Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level.
• Must understand, uphold, and continue working toward accomplishing the mission, strategic goals and performance measures of the agency.

Supervisory Responsibility: • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment: • This position operates in a kitchen work environment and may include driving to stores and childcare centers.

• Must complete a health screening physical completed within 30 days prior to employment and a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray.

CAPSLO pays the full amount (100%) of the premiums to cover full-time employees, and half (50%) of the premiums to cover eligible part-time employees.
Eligible employees may elect, at their own cost, to have medical, dental and vision insurance coverage for their dependents.
Additionally, CAPSLO offers a Long Term Disability ("LTD") insurance program for eligible employees.
Retirement Savings Plan CAPSLO offers eligible employees the opportunity to contribute a portion of their earnings to a Section 403(b) Retirement Plan.
