Definition and Purpose
The Food Service Student is a part-time, non-benefited position working with a Federal and State funded Child Care Food Program (CACFP) and is under the direct supervision of the Food Program Supervisor.
Educational and Qualifying Experience, Skills, Licenses, Credentials
Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units.
Graduate students must carry 4 units.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
Ability to communicate knowledge and collaborate with others.
Must be able to work safely and maintain sanitation standards at all times.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Must possess a great deal of attention to detail and strong record keeping skills.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds, specific needs, or limitations.
Must be highly organized and have good planning skills.
Coursework in Food Science and Nutrition preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of nutritional needs of children under 5 desirable, but not required.
Previous kitchen or cooking experience desirable, but not required.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Applicants must submit a negative tuberculosis (TB) test, fingerprint records and proof of good physical condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Nutrition Management
Work as a team to prepare all foods following Menu Production Worksheet and standardized preparation guidelines.
Assist in all aspects of meal clean up, including washing dishes, cleaning carts, and laundry.
Assure meals are delivered to classrooms on time and foods are served at appropriate temperature.
Routine cleaning, organization, and maintenance of all food program-related equipment and the service area
Assist in recording usable leftovers on Record and Menu Production Worksheet
Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area.
Maintain sanitary food preparation conditions.
Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats.
Provide quality customer service for all staff, fellow students, and families.
Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures.
Ensure a safe environment for all participants.
Be neat, clean, tactful, and courteous to all staff, fellow students, and families.
Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures.
Demonstrate ASI values in workplace demeanor and performance.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Background Check
This position is subject to a background check (including criminal records) as well as National Address Locater (Social Security Number [SSN] Trace), 7-year County Criminal Search in each county and/or state the applicant lived in based on the SSN Trace, National Criminal Database Search, Name Search, Employment Verification (All employers in past 7 years) and Education Verification (Highest Degree).
Credit Reports, Motor Vehicle Record Check and Professional License Verification may also be required based upon the essential functions of the position.
Salary Schedule
Hourly Pay Range: $16.
00 per hour - $16.
00 per hour, minimum of 10 hours per week, maximum of 20 hrs per week
Hourly Starting Rate: $16.
00 per hour
*Minimum of 3 consecutive quarters and 10 hours per week*
