Campus: San Luis Obispo Job ID: 531300 Discipline: Agriculture Appointment Type: Temporary Time Base: Full-Time Date Posted: September 25, 2023 Closing Date: Open until filled Description: The Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking applications for a two-year full-time academic year lecturer in Geospatial Sciences starting September 16, 2024, ending June 13, 2026.
This position offers individuals with completed PhDs opportunities for teaching experience, training, and collaborative research within one of the highest ranked public universities in the west.
The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses in Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Applied GIS and could develop new courses in geospatial data science.
While this is primarily a teaching position, 20% of the appointment will be assigned to support collaborative research in the college.
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department.
Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.

Required Qualifications An earned doctorate degree focused on GIS science and its application in environmental sciences and natural resources management.
Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications Ability to collaborate with the faculty across the College and University is desirable.
Preference will be given to candidates with research broadly centered on using a range of geospatial data and analytics to understand how to improve management and conservation of our working landscapes, including forests, rangeland and farms.
Scholarship alignment with key statewide priorities such as fire and carbon management, biodiversity conservation, or water management are considered strengths.
Preference will also be given to those with experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience who bring professional capabilities and those with the ability to build connections with industry and foster new relationships.

The programs enroll approximately 750 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students and are supported by 17 tenured or tenure track faculty.
The department has access to a variety of on campus and off campus field and lab resources to support hands on instruction and research, including multiple ranches and agricultural fields on campus as well as Cal Poly’s 3,000-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz county.
The department also supports strong interdisciplinary collaboration across campus including faculty participation in Cal Poly’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire institute and the new Center for Organic Production and Research, among other programs.
