Job Description and Duties The Carpenter I will be directed by the Utility Shop Supervisor in Plant Operations at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH).
The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to: • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials associated with the Carpenter Shop.
• Ability to perform the work of a journeyman carpenter.
• Has the physical agility to climb and work off ladders, work on his/her hands and knees for a prolonged time, lift and carry a minimum of seventy pounds, work unassisted if necessary, and work standing throughout the workday.
• Maintains and upkeeps all tools, equipment and buildings associated with the Carpenter Shop and Plant Operations.
• Understands and follows all division of Industrial Safety and Building Codes when work is being performed in all areas of the facility.
• Understands and knows location of Material Safety Data sheets and protective gear needed in regard to hazardous material.
• Reads, understands, and conforms to all Hospital Administrative Directives and Plant Operations policies.

BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Carpenter I Exam Bulletin, OR 2.
BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR 3.
BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry.

) OR II: Four years of varied general carpentry experience.
An Associate of Arts or Certificate of Arts Degree in Carpentry from an accredited community college may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
(Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but they must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.
